Altra Lone Peak 8 is defined by a wide, foot-shaped toe box and zero-drop geometry more than by length weirdness. Most runners stay true to size in Altra’s chart while noticing much more forefoot splay room than traditional tapered trail shoes. That “runs wide” verdict is about volume shape, not necessarily needing a different length.

If you come from narrow racing flats, Lone Peak can feel enormous in the toes even at correct length — that is intentional. Heel and midfoot still need lockdown via lacing; a too-large size will swim.

Break-in is minimal for most; focus on adapting to zero drop if you are new to Altra (calf/Achilles load). Give your body time, not just the shoe.

Versus other Altras and vs Salomon: Salomon trail shoes often feel narrower and sometimes short; do not map Salomon “size up” habits onto Altra without measuring. Within Altra, Lone Peak is among the roomiest trail options.

Sizing tips: measure foot length; use Altra’s guide. If you are between sizes and have long toes that still touch in roomy shoes, size up; if you get heel slip in wide toe boxes, stay TTS and lace-lock. Try the wide/standard options Altra offers when available for your foot.
